Free career interest test
This free career interest test asks how you’d feel doing 30 kinds of work, from building kitchen cabinets to teaching a class. The questions come from the O*NET® Interest Profiler. You’ll see which of six kinds of work you lean towards, and what each one means. No sign-in needed.
Questions from the O*NET® Interest Profiler (Mini-IP), USDOL/ETA. Used under the O*NET Tools Developer License; presentation adapted by findnewpath. O*NET® is a trademark of USDOL/ETA, which has not approved, endorsed or tested these changes.
How it works
- For each kind of work, pick how you’d feel doing it at work, from Strongly Dislike to Strongly Like. There are no right or wrong answers.
- Go with your first reaction. Don’t think about pay or whether you’re trained for it.
- After all 30, you’ll see the six kinds of work in order, with the ones you lean towards most at the top.
- If you like, carry your answers into findnewpath. Add your CV and it suggests three directions that fit you.
What the six areas mean
The test follows Holland’s six interest areas, often called RIASEC after their first letters. Each question stands for a kind of work, not its topic.
- Realistic: hands-on work with tools, machines or things.
- Investigative: research, analysis and solving problems.
- Artistic: creating, designing and writing.
- Social: helping, teaching and caring for people.
- Enterprising: leading, persuading and selling.
- Conventional: organizing data, records and processes.
What this test can and can’t tell you
It shows the kinds of work you’re drawn to. Studies consistently show that when the kind of work matches what you enjoy, people tend to do better and stay longer. The link with job satisfaction is real but smaller.
It can’t tell you what you’re good at, what you’ve already done or what you need from a job, like pay or hours. That’s why the full findnewpath flow also uses your CV and asks what gives you energy.
Questions people ask
Is it free?
Yes. The test is free and you don’t need to sign in. Your answers stay on your device unless you choose to carry them into findnewpath.
Is it a personality test?
No. It asks how you’d feel doing 30 kinds of work, not what kind of person you are. The result shows which kinds of work you lean towards.
Where do the questions come from?
From the O*NET® Interest Profiler, a free career tool from the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration (USDOL/ETA). We use the 30 questions of its short version, the Mini-IP, word for word.
Is this the official O*NET® test?
No. It uses the same 30 questions, but the presentation and the result are ours. You can take the official O*NET® Interest Profiler on My Next Move.
